The Cambridge Engineering course is unique. It allows you to maintain your options open while equipping you with all the analytical, design and computing skills that underpin trendy engineering follow.

Half I (Years 1 and 2) offers a broad schooling in engineering fundamentals, enabling you to make a genuinely informed alternative about the world in which to specialise from your third yr (many college students change direction consequently). Half II (Years three and 4) then gives in-depth training in your chosen skilled self-discipline.

The following specialisations are available within our Engineering course:

- Aerospace and Aerothermal Engineering
- Bioengineering
- Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering
- Electrical and Digital Engineering
- Electrical and knowledge Sciences
- Vitality, Sustainability and the Setting
- Info and Pc Engineering
- Instrumentation and Control
- Mechanical Engineering

See the Course outline tab and the Department website for additional details.

Department and facilities

The Department is a number one worldwide centre for research, persistently ranked the best achieving amongst British universities. We also have sturdy hyperlinks with trade, with many analysis projects funded by industrial companies.

Our services are wonderful: the Dyson Centre for Engineering Design gives access to conventional hand and machine tools, as well as fashionable pc-controlled machinery and fast prototyping; the Design and Venture Workplace is geared up with greater than eighty workstations; and the library has 30,000 books and takes about 350 journals. The Department’s Language Programme for Engineers offers specialised programs at all ranges in French, German, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.

Industrial experience

You’re required to finish six weeks of industrial experience by the top of the third year, obtained by deferring entry or throughout holidays. Our full-time Industrial Placement Co-ordinator helps deferred entrants and undergraduates to seek out suitable placements (in the UK and abroad) and sponsorship.

Alternate programmes

A small quantity of scholars spend their third 12 months studying abroad by way of our exchange schemes with Ecole Centrale Paris and the Nationwide College of Singapore (NUS).

The course is accredited by the Engineering Council and by all the most important institutions, including the Establishments of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Engineering and Know-how (IET), Civil Engineers (ICE), and Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC), the Institute of Freeway Engineers (IHE), the Chartered Establishment of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS). An applicable mixture of Part II papers is required in each case.

Changing course

Students might switch to Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology after the primary year, or to Administration Studies or Manufacturing Engineering after finishing Engineering Half I. College students could change into the Engineering third-year course, usually from Arithmetic and Natural Sciences. College students from Drugs and Veterinary Drugs might take Engineering as their third year specialisation.

To be ready to alter course, you want the agreement of your Faculty that any change is in your educational pursuits, and also you should have the necessary background in the subject to which you would like to vary - in some circumstances you could also be required to undertake some catch-up work or take up the brand new course from the start/an earlier year. You should also consider if/how altering course might have an effect on any monetary assist arrangements.

Careers

Once you graduate, you’re absolutely certified in your chosen space, knowledgeable throughout the vary of engineering disciplines, and ready to apply new technologies in novel conditions, providing you with a bonus over engineering graduates from other extra narrowly targeted programs. Prospects are usually excellent, with 96 per cent of respondents to the Graduate Outcomes survey reporting that they are had been in employment or further research 15 months after graduation.¹

Our students are in nice demand and so they go on to careers in all the foremost industrial and commercial sectors. Positions currently held by a few of our graduates embody Graduate Engineer, Atkins; Graduate RF Systems Engineer, Airbus Defence and House; Advisor, TTP plc; Analyst, Goldman Sachs; Real-Time Control and Software program Engineer, UK Atomic Energy Authority; Enterprise Analyst, McKinsey & Firm; and Manufacturing Engineer, Rolls-Royce plc..
